Today the world is literally drowning in plastic. It's poisoning our oceans, and even getting into the fish we eat! On land, millions of tons end up in overflowing landfills each year and as plastic can take hundreds of years to degrade, the problem is getting worse and worse. Each year almost 30 million kgs of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic (the least biodegradable kind) is used to make bank cards. That’s about the same weight as150 Boeing 747s! Most of these cards will end up in landfills. And the same amount next year, and the next. That’s a lot of 747s!
At DBS we have already started to use alternative types of bio-based polylactic acid (PLA) plastic for our cards. PLA plastic is derived from natural sources like sugar cane, cassava root, beetroot and corn, all of which can biodegrade easily back into the earth and won’t perpetuate the landfill disaster.
We started making DBS COMPASS VISA from PLA plastic and making DBS Eminent VISA Signature Card from plastic substitute since 2023. Stay tuned for more sustainable news as we continue to help the environment and our planet.
