Cheque clearing time

You can use the fund on the next Bank Business Day after 3:30pm

If you deposit your cheque before cut-off time, you can use the fund on the next Bank Business Day after 3:30pm.

You can check the cut-off time and arrangement under severe weather ("SW") of different channels below for reference.

"Bank Business Day" means a day (other than Saturday, Sunday or public holiday) on which commercial banks are open for general business in Hong Kong.

"Severe weather" refers to a scenario where Black Rainstorm Warning/Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.8 or above is issued by the Hong Kong Observatory or an "extreme conditions" announcement is made by the HKSAR government.

Arrangement on a Bank Business Day

Cheque deposit will be processed on the Bank Business Day after cut-off time. Please refer to the cut-off time indicated on the drop-in boxes.

DBS ATM (Available for HKD cheque only)

Cheque deposit will be processed on the Bank Business Day after cut-off time. Please refer to the cut-off time indicated on the ATMs.

Cheque return arrangement

When a cheque is returned due to insufficient fund or other reasons, it will be returned by post to the customer’s last notified mailing address, at the customer’s own risk and expense. Please refer to the Bank Charges Schedule for details.

Arrangement under severe weather (effective on 23 September 2024)

  • Funds of cheques deposited on the Bank Business Day day before a SW day will be available on that SW day.
  • No cheques will be cleared during a full SW day when bank branches are not open.
  • Cheque return arrangement is the same as that for a Bank Business Day.

  • Cheque deposited before hoisting of SW and before normal cut-off time:

    Cheque will be cleared on the same day and the funds will be available on the next Bank Business Day after 3:30pm.


  • Cheque deposited after hoisting of Black Rainstorm Signal and before normal cut-off time:

    Cheque will be cleared on the same day and the funds will be available on the next Bank Business Day after 3:30pm.


  • Cheque deposited after hoisting of No.8 Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal or above:

    If branches do not reopen on the same day, the cheque will be processed on the next Bank Business Day after the SW Day (SW Day +1 day) and the funds will be available on the day following the next Bank Business Day after the SW Day (SW Day +2 days) after 3:30pm.
    If branches reopen on the same day, the cheque will be cleared on the same day and the funds will be available on the next Bank Business Day after 3:30pm.


  • Cheque deposited after cut-off time:

    Same as the arrangement for a Bank Business Day.

Cheque deposited during a SW day will be cleared on the next Bank Business Day after the SW Day (SW Day +1 day) and the funds will be available on the day following the next Bank Business Day after the SW Day (SW Day +2) after 3:30pm.
